Who are you and what do you do for JSR?
I'm Alex (not Jack), and I play guitar and sing the songs.
Give us a Cliffs Notes history of the band.
The band started out as a solo project in 2008 when I was 19, called Jack's Smirking Revenge. In 2012, I enlisted some friends, Andrew, Ali, and Ashley to play some special full band shows for this giant songwriting project I had finished. Ali and Ashley left the band shortly after, and Tyler hopped in on drums, which is when the three of us really felt like a full band. We put out an album, toured, and Tyler left in 2014 to focus on raising his son. The teenage wonder Marc jumped in and we continued as a power trio for the next few years. I started graduate school, so things slowed down a lot. Our friend and producer, Austin asked if he could join the band as guitarist in 2016, and we welcomed him with open arms. Andrew got married and moved to Laramie last year, so now we have our friends Jackson and Bill fill in on bass fairly often now. We had been low-key going by JSR for a while, so we made the name change official, recorded this new album and toured the west coast at the end of summer. That ruled. What a year.
What do you want us to know about your new release?
This is our second full band full length, and were super proud of it. We've been working on it for about two years now, and it's the first album that has felt really collaborative between all of us. Before it was really talking old solo songs and turning them into full band songs. Its also probably our most personal album, lyrically, including the political songs.
Future plans for the band?
Hopefully do some touring and weekenders in the spring. We really wanna go back east.
What's your favorite drink?
Gin and tonic, or a good neat glass of bourbon.
Be sure to head over to Bowman’s on December 15th for the release show. More info on the show here.
